If you’re trying to increase your home’s year-round energy efficiency and comfort levels, we recommend installing insulation. In a recent blog post, we talked about when it’s time to re-insulate—this post will discuss where in your home to insulate.
Generally, insulation should be installed in all areas of your home, including:
- Walls
- Attic
- Crawl space

Where to Insulate
Although talking to insulation professionals is the best course of action, it can be helpful to have some basic information.
Wall Insulation
Both interior and exterior walls should be insulated. Also, behind your walls, there are wires, pipes and ductwork and it may be recommended to insulate around them. In general, the best types of wall insulation are blown-in fiberglass, loose-fill cellulose and spray foam.
Attic Insulation
As a significant source of energy loss, the attic is a good place to insulate. Although every attic can vary slightly, knee walls, floors and ceilings are generally insulated. In warm climates, like here in the Sacramento area, professionals sometimes install two types of attic insulation—radiant barrier (installed under the roofline to reflect heat from the sun and keep your home cooler and more energy-efficient) and thermal insulation (usually fiberglass or cellulose).
Crawl Space Insulation
Does your home have a crawl space? It should be insulated. Crawl space insulation can help reduce air leaks, control moisture problems and prevent issues like frozen pipes, soil vapor intrusion, etc. Floor joists, walls and subflooring should be insulated, depending on whether the crawl space is ventilated or unventilated—and we can help you determine which one you have. In general, the best types of crawl space insulation are foam and fiberglass.
